Spain was the first European country to form a New World colony. People from France, England, Holland, and Sweden did not settle in the Americas until after the 1600s. Spain had almost a century of support for what it claimed. Britain and France made great strides in their overseas territories in the late nineteenth century. Belgium and Germany became the new colonial powers. The US regained control of the colonies in the late 1890s by taking over other former Spanish colonies. This defeat was possible due to the high quality of military equipment imported by Europeans to America. As people living in the United States lived alone and did not have a vaccine, it spread smallpox among them. Eventually, more people died in America, which further strengthened their victory.
