Detailed Solution

Each half of the pelvis consists of one coxal bone, and they meet at the midline at a joint called the pubic symphysis.

During childhood and adolescence, the ilium, ischium, and pubis are distinct bones with separate growth plates. As a person matures, these bones gradually fuse together along specific lines called the iliac crest, ischial tuberosity, and pubic symphysis, resulting in the formation of the single, solid coxal bone.

The coxal bone, along with the sacrum and coccyx, makes up the bony pelvis, providing support and protection to the pelvic organs, such as the reproductive organs, urinary bladder, and part of the large intestine. Additionally, the coxal bone serves as the site of attachment for various muscles of the hip and thigh, enabling movements such as walking, running, and jumping.
