Anthracite is the highest quality hard coal. It is a hard, brittle, shiny black coal with a high proportion of bound carbon and a low proportion of volatiles. It has the highest carbon content, the lowest impurities, and the highest energy density of all types of coal, making it the highest-ranked coal. Most anthracite has a lower calorific value than the highest-quality hard coal. Anthracite is mainly used for home heating and gas production.
