From the foetal stage, the primary oocyte remains in prophase I for several years, until it completes meiosis I at the time of ovulation. Secondary oocyte is arrested at metaphase II three hours before ovulation. Meiosis II is completed only if the oocyte is fertilised; otherwise the secondary oocyte degenerates about 24 hours after ovulation. Thus, prophase I lasts several years while metaphase II lasts a few days.
