Progesterone acts on the mammary glands and stimulates the formation of alveoli (sac-like structures which store milk) and milk secretion. Oestrogen mainly stimulates the growth of the ductal system in the mammary glands. Prolactin mainly stimulates milk secretion. Oxytocin stimulates milk ejection.

Oestrogen and prolactin also play a role in the formation of mammary alveoli, but progesterone is the main hormone that stimulates alveologenesis.
