Sinhalese are the majority group in Sri Lanka.
According to the census completed in 2012, 70.2 percent of the population is Buddhists, while 12.6 percent of the population is Hindus, 9.7 percent of Muslims, and 7.6 percent of Christians. The majority of Sinhalese adhere to Buddhism, the vast majority of Tamils follow Hinduism, and the vast majority of Moors and Malays follow Islam. The official report from the census taken in Sri Lanka in the year 2001 said that the Sinhalese ethnic group made up 82% of the total population. The Sinhala people make up the vast bulk of the population of Sri Lanka.
