The British colonial power started establishing their control over the Massailand, i.e. the land occupied by the Maasai pastoral community, from around the late 17th century. To properly control and administer their affairs, the colonials ignored the authority of the elder and warrior classes. Instead, they started appointing chiefs of different subgroups of Maasai as those who were answerable to the government for the tribe's affairs. The leaders selected by the colonial government started accumulating wealth over time. Government employees had a steady source of income, which was used to buy animals, goods, and land. They also started participating in trade activities and began living in towns. Natural income from pastoral and non-pastoral sources helped them survive devastations caused by war or droughts.
