Detailed Solution

Alluvial soil is the most important and widely spread soil throughout the country due to the numerous rivers in the country. Alluvial soils are sediment loads brought by rivers and are very fertile, hence their importance. The very rich and fertile soil is excellent for the cultivation of crops. The deposition makes the Northern plains in India of the major rivers. Agriculture is the primary occupation of people in these regions and makes a good part of agricultural production in India. This soil comprises deposits from the three river systems - The Ganga, the Indus, and the Brahmaputra. It consists of sand, silt, and clay. According to the age of alluvial soil, it is classified as old alluvial, known as Bangar, and new alluvial soil, Khadar. Khadar is more fertile than the Bangar as it mostly contains kankar nodules.
