Detailed Solution

The official language of Sri Lanka is Sinhala. English, which was mandated during British colonial rule, was replaced by Sinhala as the official language by National Language Act No. 33 of 1956. According to a 1956 Act, Sri Lanka enacted the following measures: Buddhism must be supported and promoted by the state. Sinhala candidates were given preference in hiring practices for positions in the government and universities. Sinhala was proclaimed the only official language, with Tamil completely disregarded. By enacting the laws above in 1956, Sri Lanka deprived Tamils of equal employment opportunities and violated their political and other rights. These regulations showed a lack of consideration for the Tamil culture and language in Sri Lanka.
