Golden rice is a genetically modified rice variety rich in β -carotene. (Precursor of vitamin A). The endosperm cells of rice grains are rich with β -carotene, so they appear yellow in colour.
Vitamin A deficiency is a public health problem in many Third World countries. Many children in these countries suffer from severe night blindness. Scientists tried to address this problem by developing golden rice through genetic engineering.
