The are 12 pairs of ribs. They are classified into 3 types - 

1st - 7th ribs are called as true ribs and they are attached to the thoracic vertebrae and ventrally connected to the sternum with the help of hyaline cartilage. They are also called vertebro-sternal ribs.

8th - 10th are called as false ribs and they do not articulate directly with the sternum but join the seventh rib with the help of hyaline cartilage. They are also called vertebro-chondral ribs.

11th and 12th ribs are called as floating ribs. They are not connected ventrally.
