The law was only applicable up to Calcium (Ca), Newland assumed that only 56 elements existed, and in order to fit elements in his table, he adjusted two elements in the same slot to be the limitations of Newlands’ Law Of Octaves.
Newland gave the law of octaves in which he arranged elements in octaves such that the properties of every 8th element was similar to that of the first element. This law had a number of limitations. The law was only applicable up to Calcium (Ca), and after that, the 8th element did not show similar properties as the first one. Newland believed that there were only 56 elements in nature and that no new ones could be discovered in the near future. He moved two elements into the same position on his table to make room for them. For example, Nickel and Cobalt are in the same slot and placed in the same column as Fluorine, Bromine and Chlorine, which have very different properties than them.
