Iron filings are not compounds.
Elements and compounds are categories in which pure substances are divided. Element is the smallest entity such as argon, hydrogen atom and fluorine atom that cannot be broken down into smaller substances while CuSO4 and NaOH are examples of compounds that can be broken down further. Common salt is NaCl, water is H2O so, they are compounds while the iron filling is not a compound because it contains only one type of atom, which are the iron (Fe) atoms.
