Detailed Solution

Pia mater is the closest to the brain.

The meninges are the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. There are three layers of meninges, from outermost to innermost:

  • Dura Mater: This is the outermost layer and is a tough, fibrous membrane that provides protection and support to the brain and spinal cord. It has two layers, the periosteal layer (attached to the skull) and the meningeal layer (closer to the brain).
  • Arachnoid Mater: The arachnoid mater is located beneath the dura mater and is a delicate, web-like membrane. It contains cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the subarachnoid space, which acts as a cushion for the brain.
  • Pia Mater: The pia mater is the innermost layer, and it is the one closest to the brain and spinal cord. It is a thin, transparent membrane that adheres to the surface of the brain and spinal cord, following all the contours and grooves of these structures. The pia mater also contains blood vessels that supply nutrients to the brain.
