Aluminium is extracted by electrolytic reduction method.
In the electrolytic reduction method of refining the anode is completely made up of impure metal and the cathode is made up of pure metal. The electrodes are kept dipped inside the molten metal salt. When electricity is passed through the electrolyte the pure metal gets deposited at the cathode and the impure metal gets dissolved in the solution and rather gets deposited beneath the anode which is called anode mud. This method is widely used to refine aluminium metal.
