It is known by several different names in different parts of the world, including 'lading' in Southeast Asia,' milpa' in Central America, 'chitemene' or 'tavy' in Africa, 'chena' in Sri Lanka, and 'Ilya' in India. Penda benar, mesvel, Jun, podu, khandad, and kimei are some of the Indian types. The British considered it to be damaging to the forests. They believed that land that was only utilised for cultivation every few years would not be able to support the growth of trees for railway timber. There was a risk of the flames spreading and burning valuable timber if the forest was burned.
