Red blood cells (RBC) are also known as erythrocytes. They are important components of blood. They are continuously produced in the bone marrow. 
RBCs have a lifespan of about 100-120 days. The spleen removes and destroys the RBCs from the circulatory system after they have served their purpose. Thus, the spleen is known as the graveyard of RBC. In one second, approximately 2.5 million RBCs are destroyed.
