Detailed Solution

(b) Lysosomes

Lysosomes are the organelles known as the “suicidal bags” of the cell. They are small, membrane-bound sacs that contain powerful digestive enzymes.

Their primary job is to break down and recycle cellular waste, damaged organelles, and foreign invaders like bacteria. However, if a cell becomes old, damaged beyond repair, or infected, the lysosome can rupture and release its enzymes. These enzymes then digest the entire cell from the inside out, a process called autolysis. This mechanism of self-destruction for the good of the organism is why they earned their nickname.
