Sardinia-Piedmont, part of Italy, was ruled by an Italian princely house.
1)      In the 1830s, Giuseppe Mazzini exerted enormous effort to unite Italy. Young Italy was the resultant secret organisation he created, but sadly it was a failure.
2)      Later, the responsibility to unify all the Italian states was taken by the king, Victor Emmanuel ll.
3)      The chief minister of Sardinia- Piedmont, Count Camillo de Cavour, defeated Austria's troops through a diplomatic alliance with France in 1859.
4)      Further, in the south of Italy, a patriot and revolutionary, Mazzini Garibaldi, with his army volunteers, also joined the effort. With constant struggle, they defeated the Spanish rulers and freed the Italian states from Bourbon rulers.
5)      Finally, with the unification of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed the ruler of United Italy.
