Detailed Solution

The British used the Doctrine of Lapse to annex Jhansi, which was under Rani Lakshmibai. One of the first Indian women to rebel against the British was Rani Lakshmibai, popularly known as the Rani of Jhansi. After the passing of her husband, Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi wished for the East India Company to recognise her adopted son as the rightful heir to the throne. The British rejected this demand. The British would annexe the kingdom after the father's death under Lord Dalhousie's Doctrine of Lapse, which forbade an adopted heir from inheriting the throne.
