Bordeaux was the port city that led to the economic prosperity of the flourishing slave trade.
Apart from Bordeaux, Nantes was also a major port which had witnessed slave trade. The slave trade began in the 17th century wherein the French merchants sailed from the ports of Bordeaux or Nantes to the African coast as part of Triangular slave trade. Here they bought slaves from local chieftains. And after branding the slaves, they were packed tightly into the ships for atleast three-month-long voyage across the Atlantic ocean all the way to the Caribbean. And later they were sold to the plantation owners.
