  • Cinnabar is a mercury ore. Its chemical formula is HgS.
  • Mercury is one of the least reactive metals in the reactivity series. The heating of sulphide ores in the presence of excess air for conversion into oxides is known as roasting.
  • Cinnabar is firstly heated in air. It converts HgS to HgO through the release of sulphur dioxide.
  •  The mercury oxide obtained is again heated heavily. It reduces mercury oxide into mercury metal.
  • Thus, the extraction of a metal from cinnabar ore is through roasting.
