Let us assume X be the oxidation number of vanadium. Oxygen oxidation number is -2. There is a charge -2 on the complex. 

            X + 1×(-2) = -2

             X-2 = -2

           X = -2+2

         X = 0. 

Whereas in the case of V2O3, vanadium exists in +3.

Let us assume X be the oxidation number of vanadium. Oxygen oxidation number is -2.

So, 2X+3×(-2)=0

  2 X+(-6)=0 

  2 X=+6

  X=6 / 2 

  X=3
