Detailed Solution

Shifting cultivation refers to theType of cultivation under which parts of forests are cut and burnt in rotation. It is a traditional agricultural practice in areas of Asia, Africa, and South America. In shifting cultivation, land is burnt into ashes. The seeds are sown in ashes after the first monsoon. The crop produced is harvested in the months of October-November. The land cleared is cultivated for a few years and then left fallow for 12-18 years to regrow the forests. In India, it is known as jhum, nevada, etc. However, the British saw shifting cultivation as harmful to forests and decided to ban the practice.
