Harshavardhana conquered the regions of Magadha and Bengal. The ruler of Bengal assassinated Harsha's brother-in-law, who was also the ruler of Kanauj. After assuming control of the Kanauj kingdom, Harsha raised an army to battle the Bengal emperor. He was successful in the east, where he likely conquered Bengal and Magadha, but less so elsewhere. He attempted to march across the Narmada to the Deccan, but Pulakeshin II, a king from the Chalukya dynasty, stopped him.
The Aihole inscription of Pulkeshin II mentions his successful battle against Harshavardhana in the Narmada region.
