The ocean helps regulate the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere through a process called the carbon cycle. Carbon dioxide is constantly exchanged between the atmosphere and the ocean through physical and biological processes.

When carbon dioxide dissolves in ocean water, it reacts with water molecules to form carbonic acid, which then dissociates into bicarbonate ions and hydrogen ions. These bicarbonate ions can react with other dissolved ions in the water to form carbonate ions, which can then combine with calcium ions to form calcium carbonate, a key component of shells and skeletons of marine organisms. When these organisms die, their shells and skeletons sink to the ocean floor and become buried in sediment, removing carbon from the carbon cycle.
