One of the well-known social reformers who spearheaded the fight against the pervasive caste prejudice in India was Jyothiba Pule. She rose up in opposition to Brahmin domination and battled for the rights of those from lower castes. Fighting for the rights of Dalits, also known as untouchables, and members of lower castes were Dr BR Ambedkar's major contribution. He argued for separate electorates for Dalits and members of lower castes during the creation of the Govt. of India Act of 1919. In the 1930s, Mahatma Gandhi popularized the word "Harijan" (literally, "children of God") to dispel the derogatory connotation attached to caste names.
