Detailed Solution

Black soil is also known as regur soil. The black soils are found in lava-covered places. They are often referred to as "black cotton soils" because cotton is the most common traditional crop in those places. Black soils are mostly found in interior Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh, where moderate rainfall and basaltic rock are present. During the dry season, black soils develop massive cracks due to their high clay content, but their iron-rich granular structure protects them against wind and water erosion. They have a low humus content but are very moisture-retentive.
