Detailed Solution

Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a soil bacterium that causes crown gall disease in dicot plants (eukaryotic cells). Due to its ability to transfer genes into plant cells, it is used as a tool to deliver desired genes into plants.

(2) The tumour inducing (Ti) plasmid of Agrobacterium tumefaciens is modified by removing the T–DNA portion (tumour causing genes). The disarmed Ti plasmid is no longer pathogenic to the plant but is still able to deliver genes of interest into a variety of plants.

(3), (4). A. tumefaciens transfers its T-DNA portion that codes for tumour inducing genes into normal plant cells and transforms them into tumorous cells.
