Intercalated discs are characteristically present in cardiac muscle tissue but not smooth muscle tissue.
(1) Smooth muscles are present in the walls of hollow visceral organs such as blood vessels (tunica media), alimentary canal (muscularis) and urinary bladder (detrusor muscle).
(2) Since thick and thin myofi laments are not regularly arranged, smooth muscle fibres are unstriated (lack striations). Skeletal muscle fibres and cardiac muscle fibres are striated.
(3) Smooth muscle fibres are innervated by autonomic nerve fibres and they are involuntary (not under conscious control).
