Social differences are mainly of two kinds. They can be either overlapping or crosscutting. In overlapping social differences, one social difference overlaps with another. For instance, racial and class differences overlap in American society. African Americans are not only degraded to a secondary social status but also suffer from economic impoverishment. Poverty exists much more widely among African Americans than whites in the US. In cross-cutting differences, one social difference cuts through another difference. In the Netherlands, for example, religious and class differences cut through each other. Being a Protestant or a Catholic puts one in the same boat as being rich or poor. No one social group gets an advantage over the other. Overlapping social differences tend to deepen social divisions. As a result, African Americans in the United States would feel very disconnected and separate from whites despite belonging to the same country. However, the different social groups feel more connected in the Netherlands despite their other differences.
