Pollen grains of many species can germinate on the stigma of a fl ower but only the compatible pollen grains of the same species are allowed to germinate and the pollen tubes travel through the style to reach the ovules. These pollen tubes enter the embryo sac through filiform apparatus of synergids. The pollen grains may be selfcompatible or cross-compatible or both self and cross-compatible.
