Unlike plant cells, animal cells do not have a cell wall. Instead, they are surrounded by a plasma membrane that separates the cell from its external environment. 

The plasma membrane is composed of lipids and proteins, and it regulates the movement of molecules in and out of the cell. While some animal cells do produce an extracellular matrix that provides support and protection, it is not a true cell wall like that found in plant cells, and it is not composed of cellulose or starch.
