Bihar is a major producer of maize in India. Maize is a secondary grain used for both food and fodder. Its grain provides food and is used to produce starch and glucose. Cattle graze on its stalk. The crop is irrigated in areas with less rainfall. This crop grows best in temperatures ranging from 21°C to 27°C, but it can tolerate temperatures as high as 35°C. Maize is damaged by frost, so it is grown only in areas where there are four and a half frost-free months per year. Bihar is the third largest maize developing state, accounting for approximately 14% of total national production.
