Detailed Solution

Bombay and Calcutta are the two ports that grew after the European companies gained power in trade in India. A large number of Indian merchants were involved in the silk and cotton trade network that dominated the global textile market. By the 1750s, however, the Indian merchants' trading network had begun to deteriorate. This collapse provided an opportunity for European corporations to gain clout. They obtained a lot of concessions from local rulers before monopolising trade rights. This resulted in the demise of the old ports of Surat and Hooghly, which were once vital trading ports for local merchants. New ports, like Bombay and Calcutta, began to flourish. European corporations had entire control over trade from these new ports, and products were transported on European ships.
