A neuron is the basic functional unit of the nervous system comprising a single large cell, dendrites, and axons. In the human body, neurons exist in the spinal cord and the brain.

On the basis of function, neurons are classified into three types.

  1. Sensory neurons: On stimulation, they transmit the electrical impulses to the central nervous system (CNS) conveying the perceived information for processing.
  2. Motor neurons: They send impulses from the spinal cord to skeletal and smooth muscles and directly control all muscle movements.
  3. Interneurons: They are mediators between the sensory neurons and the motor neurons and bridge the communication chain.

On the basis of structure, neurons can be nonpolar, unipolar, bipolar, multipolar, and anaxonic whereas, on the basis of the structural composition of nerve fibre, neurons can be myelinated and nonmyelinated.
