‘Chhote Aur Bade Ka Sawal’ was written and published in 1938 by Kashibaba, a Kanpur millworker, to expose the links between caste and class exploitation. Factory workers were overworked and lacked the education to write extensively about their experiences. Following in the footsteps of Bombay cotton mill employees, Bangalore cotton mill workers established libraries to educate themselves by the 1930s. These were sponsored by social reformers who hoped to reduce excessive drinking, increase reading, and, on occasion, instil a sense of nationality in the participants.
