Born in Edo in 1753, Kitagawa Utamaro is well-known for his contributions to the art form known as ukiyo, or the portrayal of human situations, particularly urban ones. These prints affected artists like Manet, Monet, and Van Gogh as they traveled to the modern US and Europe. Publishers like Tsutaya Juzaburo chose the themes and hired painters to outline them. The drawing was then put on a woodblock and cut into a printing block by an expert woodblock carver to replicate the painter's lines. The original drawing would be lost during the process, and only prints would be left.
