The Estates General was elected by the body of active citizens and renamed the National Assembly.
The National Assembly replaced the Estates General as the body of elective citizens. The National Assembly existed from 17 June 1789 to 29 September 1791 during the French Revolution. It was a revolutionary assembly formed by the elected representatives of the estates. The First Estate consisted of the clergy, the Second Estate of the nobility and the Third Estate of the common man. New hymns and songs were composed, oaths taken, and martyrs commemorated, all in the name of the nation. It marked the beginning of the revolution in France, which shook the throne of Louis XVI.
