The name Mohenjo-daro is said to mean "the dead mound." The archaeological significance of the site was first recognised in 1922, one year after Harappa was discovered. Subsequent excavations revealed that the mounds housed the ruins of the Indus civilization's largest city. R. D. Banerji discovered Mohenjo-Daro in 1922, an Archaeological Survey of India officer, two years after the major excavations began at Harappa, 590 kilometers to the north. A bronze statuette known as the "Dancing Girl," which stood 10.5 centimeters (4.1 in) tall, was discovered in Mohenjo-Daro in 1926. At Mohenjodaro, a bearded man in a steatite image was discovered and a seal that depicts Mother Goddess with a plant growing from her womb and a woman about to be sacrificed by a man wielding a knife was also discovered.
