The Self-Respect Movement was founded by Periyar.
Periyar established the Self Respect Movement after being convinced that untouchables needed to fight for their dignity. He maintained that the original Tamil and Dravidian culture, which Brahmans had subdued, was indeed kept by untouchables. So when he saw that seating arrangements at a feast organised by nationalists reflected caste distinctions, meaning that the lower castes were ordered to sit apart from the upper castes, he left Congress in disgust.
