Detailed Solution

Reservation of seats in the Parliament was not a demand of the Sri Lankan Tamils.
Since 1948, after Sri Lanka gained independence, the Sinhala leaders, despite being democratically elected, were adopting majoritarian measures to establish the Sinhala-speaking people’s supremacy and also created policies that favoured the Sinhalese in government jobs and university admissions. The Tamils were alienated. They demanded a separate Tamil Eelam, recognition of Tamil as an official language, and equal opportunities for Tamils in jobs and governmental institutions. Gradually, these demands took the shape of militancy. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, a militant organisation, headed by Vellupillai Prabhakaran, was formed to achieve these demands.
