Mozambique was not a popular location for indentured Indian migrants. Indentured labourers were contractually obligated to work for an employer for years to pay for their journey to a new country. Most Indian indentured migrants came from Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, central India, and the dry parts of Tamil Nadu, where they desired a fresh start or had no choice but to travel for employment. As a result, they mainly migrated to the Caribbean islands to work on plantations, mining, or building projects, notably Trinidad, Guyana, Suriname, Mauritius, and Fiji.
