With the arrival of the British, exchange was managed by the government. The British government granted several European trading organisations the exclusive right to swap wood objects from specific districts. However, brushing and hunting were prohibited for locals. As a result, many pastoralist and migrating Madras Presidency populations, including the Korava, Karacha, and Yerukula, lost their subsistence. Some became known as "criminal clans" and were forced to work in enterprises under government supervision.
