Barygaza was the Greek name for Bharuch.
For people approaching from the sea, the gulf at Barygaza is extremely narrow and challenging to negotiate. Ships had to be navigated by a knowledgeable and skilled local fisherman who worked for the king. Wine, copper, tin, lead, coral, topaz, cloth, gold, and silver coins were among the imports into Barygaza. The town also exported cotton, silk, ivory, agate, carnelian, Himalayan flora, and perfumes. The king received special gifts from merchants. Silverware, singing boys, gorgeous women, expensive wines, and rich fabrics were among them.
