Mahatma Gandhi successfully organised Satyagraha activities across India after his arrival. In 1917, he staged a Satyagraha to help the farmers in Gujarat's Kheda area. Kheda farmers had been unable to pay the revenue due to crop failures and the devastating droughts, and they wanted the taxes cut. Moreover, the Presidency of Bombay raised taxes by 23% between 1917 and 1918, even though many died of cholera. Hence Gandhiji and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel led the Kheda Satyagraha when the region was plagued by starvation, cholera, and disease that devastated the agricultural sector.
