Detailed Solution

Indiscriminate cutting of trees by contractors was the reason for forests disappearing near railway tracks.
As of the 1860s, the railway network rapidly grew. About 25,500 km of track had been built by 1890. The rails' length had risen to more than 765,000 km by 1946. As the railway tracks stretched across India, a growing number of trees were cut down. Thirty-five thousand trees were cut down yearly for sleepers in the Madras Presidency alone as early as the 1850s. To procure the necessary amounts, the government awarded contracts to private parties. These contractors started cutting down trees carelessly. Forests beside the railroad tracks quickly began to vanish.
