Detailed Solution

The indiscriminate cutting of trees by contractors led to forests disappearing near railway tracks during colonial rule in India. By 1890, some 25,500 km of railway track had been constructed. By 1946, the length of the rails had increased to more than 765,000 km. As the railroad tracks increased, more and more trees were felled. As early as the 1850s, 35,000 trees a year were cut down for sleepers in the Madras Presidency alone. The government awarded contracts to private parties to cut trees. These contractors started carelessly cutting down trees. The forests quickly started to disappear.
