The British were confident of ruling India because they had Indian soldiers' loyalty and faithfulness to the British army, kings and zamindars' support and a weakening of Mughal rule. The rajas and nawabs had relatively little power in the middle of the 18th century. The military forces were disbanded, and the nawabs and rajas lost control of their lucrative domains. India was one country, and the British had Residents stationed in numerous provinces and courts. These Residents would provide the British Governor with every detail about the kingdom.
