Sambad Kaumudi was published by Raja Ram Mohan Roy and it discussed the matters of religious reforms. From the early 19th century there was an intense debate for controversies between social and religious reforms and the Hindu orthodoxy. In Bengal, as the debates developed, magazines and newspapers proliferated, circulating a variety of arguments. So to reach a wider audience, the ideas were printed in the everyday spoken language of ordinary people. Therefore Rammohun Roy published the Sambad Kaumudi. To oppose his opinion, the Hindu orthodoxy commissioned the Samachar Chandrika.
